Man United wins after horror start, Arsenal draws after also conceding early in EPL

Published Tue, 25 Feb 2025 17:19:39 GMT

LONDON (AP) — Manchester United suffered its worst-ever start to an English Premier League game and still managed to win. Arsenal gave away a goal after less than a minute and couldn’t quite pull off a similar comeback.United bounced back from conceding two goals in the opening four minutes to beat Nottingham Forest 3-2 at Old Trafford on Saturday and avoid an early inquest following a dispiriting loss at Tottenham last weekend. Arsenal also thought it turned the game around against Fulham when led 2-1 in the second half, only to concede an 87th-minute equalizer from a corner for a 2-2 draw at Emirates Stadium that ended the Gunners’ perfect start to the campaign. For United, it was the first time the club trailed by two goals after four minutes in the league, but captain Bruno Fernandes completed the comeback from the penalty spot in the 76th minute after Forest went down to 10 men. “Horror start,” United manager Erik ten Hag said. “But the character of the team w...

No more Confederate names for Army installations in Virginia after Fort Walker redesignation

Published Tue, 25 Feb 2025 17:19:39 GMT

The last military installation in Virginia named after a Confederate soldier has been officially renamed from Fort A.P. Hill to Fort Walker in honor of Doctor Mary E. Walker. The redesignation ceremony was held as the U.S. celebrates Women’s Equality Day. Major General Trevor Bredenkamp says Mary Walker served the Army with distinction.“The first woman surgeon in the United States Army, a prisoner of war and the only woman awarded the medal of honor,” Bredenkamp said. “What a fitting tribute that today we designate this installation Fort Walker, the only installation in the Army to be named solely for a woman.” Walker, who was a civilian, treated wounded Union soldiers at field hospitals throughout the Civil War, even though her application to be an official Army surgeon was denied because she was a woman.Bredenkamp said that Virginia has now renamed all of its military installations named for Confederate soldiers.Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III...

Barker was 99.Barker — also a longtime animal rights activist — died Saturday morning, according to publicist Roger Neal.“I am so proud of the trailblazing work Barker and I did together to expose the cruelty to animals in the entertainment industry and including working to improve the plight of abused and exploited animals in the United States and internationally,” said Nancy Burnet, his longtime friend and caretaker, in a statement. Barker retired in June 2007, telling his studio audience: “I thank you, thank you, thank you for inviting me into your home for more than 50 years.”Barker was working in radio in 1956 when producer Ralph Edwards invited him to audition as the new host of “Truth or Consequences,” a game show in which audience members had to do wacky stunts — the “conseq...

The 49ers’ heavy investment in Trey Lance backfires, but it hasn’t destroyed the franchise

Published Tue, 25 Feb 2025 17:19:39 GMT

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Few teams have ever invested as much capital into acquiring as the San Francisco 49ers did when they traded three first-round picks to draft Trey Lance. And few teams have ever cut ties with a highly drafted quarterback as quickly as San Francisco did with Lance, trading him away for a pittance before the start of his third season.“Obviously we took our shot, and it didn’t work out,” coach Kyle Shanahan said. “So, that’s on us for that. But I’m not going to say anything is a failure. That’d be too much of a negative toward Trey. I get our deal. We took a shot to go for that. We were hoping that he could be our guy, and that didn’t work out.”A colossal miss of this nature could set back a franchise for years as the Niners traded away the 12th pick of the 2021 draft, first-round picks in 2022 and ’23 that ended up being 29th overall and a third-round pick to draft the untested Lance third overall in 2021.They then paid him about $28 million to make four...
