Kiner-Falefa gets Yankees 1st straight steal of home since 2016

Published Tue, 25 Feb 2025 15:16:52 GMT

NEW YORK (AP) — Isiah Kiner-Falefa took a big lead off third base and kept waiting for pitcher Brooks Raley or third baseman Eduardo Escobar to notice. They never did.So he kept going and slid across the plate with one of baseball’s most electrifying plays: a steal of home.“He didn’t acknowledge me. The third baseman didn’t acknowledge me,” Kiner-Falefa said after the Yankees’ 4-3, 10-inning loss to the New York Mets on Wednesday night. “I just couldn’t believe I did that in the big leagues.”With the score 1-1 in the seventh and two on, Kiner-Falefa hit a grounder to shortstop Francisco Lindor, who threw to second base for a forceout. Jeff McNeil’s throw to first was going to be too late to catch Kiner-Falefa, and the ball went off the mitt of rookie Mark Vientos for an error that allowed Josh Donaldson to score.Kiner-Falefa stole second on a 1-1 pitch to Billy McKinney and took third when Francisco Álvarez’s throw skipped into center for an error. MANDVI, India (AP) — A vast swath of western India and neighboring southern Pakistan that suffered deadly floods last year are bracing for a new deluge as fast-approaching Cyclone Biparjoy whirls toward landfall Thursday. Rain was falling and skies were darkening in western India and in southern Pakistan along the Arabian Sea, where dusty storms were hampering the evacuation and rescue work. Authorities expect conditions to worsen for two or three days after the cyclone makes landfall in India’s Gujarat.Officials from the two South Asian countries stood on high alert as the cyclone approached. It’s expected to make landfall near Jakhau port in India’s Kutch district and inundate the area. In Pakistan, Keti Bandar in the country’s flood-ravaged southern Sindh province, also lies in Biparjoy’s path. The bazaars and beaches in Mandvi, India, usually a bustling coastal town known for its wooden boat-makers, were deserted Thursday under shutdown orders from ...

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Sunlight filters through shattered windows, casting a glow upon the dusty furniture and fragments of glass strewn across the floor of the office belonging to Oleksandr Vinkovskyi, director of a Kyiv business where visually impaired people worked.Vinkovskyi is blind, and can’t see the scale of damage caused by debris from one of many Russian-fired drones on the Ukrainian capital last month. But he knows that 80 people, including 54 with a disability who used to work there manufacturing circuit breakers, sockets and hangers, are now out of work. Most of the windows have been shattered, the doors broken, equipment ruined, and a gaping hole marks the wall on the third floor. Vinkovskyi has halted the operation for now, deeming it too dangerous for his employees.“A visually impaired person goes to work not only to earn money, but also to communicate, interact, and be part of society in some way,” said Vinkovskyi. “And I don’t know how to estimate this loss.”Losi...

New US military aid to Ukraine pushes Washington deeper 'into abyss of conflict'

The new $325 million US military aid package for Ukraine pushes Washington deeper into the "abyss" of the conflict, Russia's ambassador to the United States, Anatoly Antonov, said early on Wednesday (14 June). The package, which includes munitions for air defence systems, ammunition and vehicles, comes as Ukraine is shaping its long-expected counter-offensive. In the past week, Ukrainian forces lost some tanks and armoured vehicles provided by western allies while making small initial territorial gains."The United States is getting deeper and deeper into the abyss of the Ukrainian crisis," Antonov was quoted as saying in a post on the embassy's Telegram messaging channel."Apparently, the strategists from the United States somehow do not understand that no amount of weapons, whatever involvement of mercenaries, will be able to turn the tide in the course of (Russia's) special military operation."Russia refers to its actions in Ukraine as a "special military operation", rather than a w...

A "transparent and objective" international investigation into the blasts at the Nord Stream natural gas pipelines is needed, a high-ranking Russian diplomat to the United States said early on Wednesday (14 June).Commenting on reports that the US reportedly warned Ukraine not to attack the pipelines under the Baltic Sea, Andrey Ledenev, minister-counsellor at the embassy, said the role of the United States in the blasts should also be "clarified"."It would be useful to think about the reasons for the stubborn unwillingness of the collective West to launch a transparent and objective international investigation under the auspices of the UN Security Council in the terrorist attacks in the Baltic Sea," Ledenev was quoted as saying in a post on the embassy's Telegram messaging channel.
