Pembroke Ave. this summer. But their renovations took a detour when they discovered a mysterious vault as they tore down drywall inside the roughly 2,400-square-foot building.Napier said he knew the building had previously served as a bank through the 1990s but had no idea the vault was left behind. Excited by what they found, Spring started recording their discoveries and uploading the videos to Instagram and Facebook.“I just posted that video randomly because people like house flipping shows,” Spring said. “I’m like, ‘Well, how about, like, business flipping?’ Right? Pattern Turning Wetter

Published Fri, 15 Nov 2024 06:48:03 GMT

Pattern Turning Wetter A typical Summer-like pattern is underway for South Florida this Sunday with a couple passing showers on the breeze. By the afternoon, temperatures quickly warm up into the upper 80’s to low 90’s with the sea breeze developing isolated storms favoring inland areas. Some of the leftover activity could drift early evening into Metro portions of Miami-Dade county. Overnight, there is a slight chance of seeing a few showers around the Florida Keys. By Tuesday, deeper moisture moves into the state of Florida and gets trapped by a stalled front making conditions ripe for rain. The deeper moisture is located North of the Dominican Republic and Haiti and stretches into the Southern Bahamas including the Turks and Caicos Islands. It is associated with a disturbance high up in the sky. Therefore, look for it be wet at times from Tuesday through Friday. The National Hurricane Center started to keep a close eye on that area of disturbed weather producing scattered showers and storms...

In Hiroshima, Zelenskyy borrows history to fight for the future HIROSHIMA, Japan — No one fears a repeat of this city’s suffering more than Volodymyr Zelenskyy. From the moment the world’s most recognizable president-in-uniform walked down the stairs from the Republique Française plane at the Hiroshima airport on Saturday, the Ukrainian leader soon captured all the attention at the G7 summit — downsized from G8 almost a decade ago after Russia was kicked out following its illegal occupation of Crimea.Zelenskyy toured the site where an American atomic bomb put an end to the Second World War in 1945, as his people were fighting on the frontline in Ukraine, preparing for an offensive against Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invading forces while fighting back Moscow’s claims that the key Ukrainian city of Bakhmut had fallen. His surprise, whirlwind visit carried a sense of urgency in contrast to the somewhat relaxing schedule for the G7 leaders, some of whom took their spouses on the mission, enjoyed tea ceremonies and visit...

In Cannes, Scorsese and DiCaprio turn spotlight toward Osage Nation

In Cannes, Scorsese and DiCaprio turn spotlight toward Osage Nation CANNES, France (AP) — It was well into the process of making “Killers of the Flower Moon” that Martin Scorsese realized it wasn’t a detective story. Scorsese, actor Leonardo DiCaprio and screenwriter Eric Roth had many potential avenues in adapting David Grann’s expansive nonfiction history, “Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI.” The film that Scorsese and company premiered Saturday at the Cannes Film Festival, however, wasn’t like the one they initially set out to make. The film, which will open in theaters in October, chronicles the series of killings that took place throughout the Osage Nation in 1920s Oklahoma. The Osage were then enormously rich from oil on their land, and many white barons and gangsters alike sought to control and steal their money. Dozens of Osage Native Americans were killed before the FBI, in its infancy, began to investigate. DiCaprio had originally been cast to star as FBI agent Tom White. But aft...

Boots on the ground, eyes in the sky: satellites increasingly used to fight wildfires Eyes in the sky are becoming an increasingly important tool for boots on the ground when it comes to fighting wildfires, experts say, as data from a growing number of satellites give firefighters new tools to predict fire behaviour and analyze its consequences.  “It’s being more and more adopted,” said wildfire expert Mike Flannigan of Thompson Rivers University. “In the old days, almost no one was using satellites. Now they’re being used more and more.”The last decade has seen a huge jump in the number Earth observation satellites, driven by cheaper technology and the entry of private industry. A count from the Union of Concerned Scientists says there were 192 such satellites in 2014. Now there are 971. That has given wildfire managers and scientists unprecedented ability to get the big picture, said Joshua Johnston, a Natural Resources Canada scientist working on WildfireSat, which will be the world’s first purpose-built satellite for moni...
