AUBURN, Ala. (AP) — Auburn fans will once again be able to celebrate victories by rolling the oak trees at Toomer’s Corner with toilet paper.Auburn had asked fans not to roll the new trees after their planting in February 2017 until they were established enough to avoid damage. The trees were removed after being poisoned by Alabama fan Harvey Updyke in 2010.Two new live oaks were planted in 2015 but both were removed after being damaged by fire while celebrating a win over LSU.“The rolling of Toomer’s Corner is one of the nation’s top sports traditions,” Auburn President Christopher B. Roberts said. “Our fans have come together for decades on the corner of Magnolia and College to celebrate our big wins.“In recent years, we continued our cherished tradition by rolling different trees, but I am very excited that the Auburn family will once again be able to roll our most prominent trees.”Updyke, who died in 2020, had pleaded guilty to poisoning the trees, which were planted...

It’s the biggest Mega Millions jackpot ever. Feeling lucky?

Published Tue, 25 Feb 2025 14:09:57 GMT

The largest Mega Millions jackpot ever is up for grabs Tuesday night. The odds of winning are slim, less than 1 in 302 million, but if someone lucks out, they’ll wake up more than $1.5 billion richer — at least, before taxes. The reason the jackpot grew so big is no one has matched all the necessary numbers going back to mid April, but that’s all due to change Tuesday night, according to customers who bought their tickets from Crescent Wine and Spirits in Bowie, Maryland.“Of course, everybody thinks they have the winning ticket, but I know I have it,” said one woman, who chose to stay anonymous because of the windfall she’s expecting in her bank account. She vowed most people will never know she won.“My neighbors will probably find out when I start doing things to the house,” she said. “I mind my own business, I expect them to mind their own business,” she added with a laugh. The other four biggest Mega Millions jackpots were all won by a single ticket, but apparently that won’t be the...

Former NASCAR Cup Series champion Chase Elliott running out of time to make playoffs

BROOKLYN, Mich. (AP) — Chase Elliott is running out of time. The 2020 NASCAR Cup Series champion, whose year was stunted by a snowboarding accident and hindered by a suspension, needs to win one of the next three races to earn a spot in the playoffs.“It’s the only option,” he acknowledged. On a short week, the series shifts to the road course at Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the Verizon 200 on Sunday before the regular season closes with races at Watkins Glen and Daytona.Elliott lasted just 34 laps in the FireKeepers 400 at Michigan, where Chris Buescher won his second straight race on Monday, because a tire failure sent his car into the wall.“Add it to the list,” he said. The Hendrick Motorsports star had a setback March when he had surgery on his left leg after a snowboarding accident in Colorado, knocking him out of the Pennzoil 400 in Las Vegas days later and the next five races. After coming back, NASCAR suspended him for one race after it determined he deliberately wrecke...

Jets’ defense ready to face a new QB in Carolina after learning sessions in camp with Aaron Rodgers

Published Tue, 25 Feb 2025 14:09:57 GMT

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Aaron Rodgers was calling out signals during a recent walkthrough practice when C.J. Mosley spotted exactly what the New York Jets’ offense was lining up to do.It’s an on-field chess match between the New York Jets middle linebacker and quarterback — and Mosley cracked the code in that moment.“He looked at me and said, ‘What did you say?’ and changed the play,” a smiling Mosley said Tuesday, adding it has been one of the “coolest things” he has seen in training camp this summer. “And then I was like, ‘Oh, that’s different right there.’ Just little stuff like that.”But that has actually been the big stuff Rodgers has brought to the Jets since being acquired from Green Bay in April. The 39-year-old Rodgers is building a rapport with the offense and looking to turn one of the NFL’s worst units the past few seasons into one of its best. He’s also helping the defense improve by keeping that side of the ball on its toes. Rodgers rout...

UNC is appealing to the NCAA for immediate eligibility for transfer WR Devontez Walker

Published Tue, 25 Feb 2025 14:09:57 GMT

North Carolina coach Mack Brown said Tuesday the school is appealing to the NCAA for immediate eligibility for transfer Devontez Walker, the Tar Heels’ presumed No. 1 receiver whose status is in question weeks before the opener. The NCAA denied the waiver for Walker to play immediately after his transfer from Kent State, where he played two seasons. NCAA rules generally allow players to transfer freely once, but Brown said Walker had enrolled at UNC in January just days before the NCAA revised rules to limit waivers for two-time transfers for evaluation on a case-by-case basis.“He’s just down, he’s wondering, he’s anxious, and it’s really, really hard to focus in practice,” Brown told reporters after Tuesday’s practice in Chapel Hill. “And I feel tough for him.”Walker is an instate product from Charlotte and had transferred to be closer to family, notably an ailing grandmother who had played a large role in raising him but has been unable to travel...
