FRANKFURT — The European Central Bank raised its key deposit rate to an all-time high, but signaled that it thinks it has done enough to end the worst bout of inflation in four decades. “Based on its current assessment, the Governing Council considers that the key ECB interest rates have reached levels that, maintained for a sufficiently long duration, will make a substantial contribution to the timely return of inflation to the target,” the ECB said in a statement. The move showed that, in the near term at least, the bank is still more concerned about inflation staying above target than about risking a recession. “The ECB didn’t blink in the face of growing speculation that it would hit pause on the rate-hiking cycle,” said UBS economist Dean Turner after the announcement. “We expect this to be the last hike from the ECB in this cycle, but that does not mean the era of tight monetary policy is over. Interest rates are likely to remain at...Teen arrested, charged with murder in connection with fatal Lawrence shooting

(CNN) — The convicted murderer who escaped a Pennsylvania prison late last month is once again behind bars, now facing additional charges, after a nearly two-week manhunt that captured national attention and put the surrounding community on edge.Police caught Danilo Cavalcante, 34, by surprise in the woods of South Coventry Township on Wednesday morning, where a police dog played a critical role in his dramatic capture. The escaped inmate was planning to leave the country, according to Robert Clark, supervisory deputy US marshal for Pennsylvania’s eastern district.“His endgame was to carjack somebody and to head north up to Canada and he intended to do that in the next 24 hours,” Clark told CNN’s Erin Burnett on Wednesday.Clark, who did not speak with Cavalcante, cited what deputy marshals told him about an interview that the prisoner had with law enforcement officials after his capture.“He said the law enforcement presence where he was, was immense and he fe...NASA releases UFO report, says new science techniques needed to better understand them

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — NASA said Thursday that the study of UFOs will require new scientific techniques, including advanced satellites as well as a shift in how unidentified flying objects are perceived. The space agency released the findings after a yearlong study into UFOs.In its 33-page report, an independent team commissioned by NASA cautioned that the negative perception surrounding UFOs poses an obstacle to collecting data. But officials said NASA’s involvement should help reduce the stigma around what it calls UAPs, or unidentified anomalous phenomena.NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said the agency wants to shift the conversation about UAPs “from sensationalism to science.” Nelson added the panel found no evidence that UAPs had extraterrestrial origin. The 16-member panel noted that artificial intelligence and machine learning are essential for identifying rare occurrences, including UFOs.“NASA will do this transparently,” Nelson said.At the one and only public meeting earlier t...Boston Herald’s High School football database

SAN DIEGO -- A reward is being offered for a burglar in the South Bay who was caught on camera stealing luxury designer Hermès blankets.“The irony is he waved to the other contractors as he was leaving," said Dr. James Graham, the owner of the home hit that was robbed. "To say that we're violated is an understatement. We feel extremely violated that this happened in broad daylight."Around 11:30 a.m. on Aug. 22, a suspected burglar made his way into a Bonita home on Carvalos Drive, despite nearly every door being locked. Lufthansa Airlines to expand nonstop flight service from San Diego “We left the door open for the contractors to use the restroom and he spent 20 minutes exploring our house,” said Dr. Graham.Due to renovations being done at the home that day, the electrical grid happened to be down, meaning the vast majority of security cameras weren’t on. However, there were back up cameras recording.Dr. Graham told FOX 5 the only room the man could make it into was a guest bedro...Why is there a major mosquito bloom in San Diego?
Published Fri, 15 Nov 2024 07:26:08 GMT
SAN DIEGO -- Mosquitoes are the pests that won’t go away after San Diego County experienced the rare tropical storm that left ponds puddles and lakes filled with water. Those standing bodies of water are now turning on a relatively new mosquito to our area called the Aedes Aegypti. The first Aedes mosquitoes were seen in 2014 and they are known for low level flying and attacking people’s ankles, giving them no buzzing warnings. Lufthansa Airlines to expand nonstop flight service from San Diego “They will take advantage any small source of water and even if it is as small as a bottle cap of water, if it’s there for a week or longer it has potential to breed mosquitos,” said Chris Conlan, a senior entomologist at San Diego County Vector control. This mosquito doesn’t travel very far so experts say to walk your property looking for standing water along with clearing out drainage pipes that might pooling water.
