Plans for Colorado’s largest battery plant in Brighton nearly ran out of juice in the face of strong opposition from neighbors who fear chemical contamination from the planned lithium-ion manufacturing facility. But in a 4-3 vote Tuesday night, the Brighton City Council passed an ordinance granting the proper zoning for the site on South Bromley Lane. The approval will allow Amprius Technologies Inc. to build out a 775,000-square-foot facility within a vacant industrial building to produce batteries for a world rapidly turning to non-fossil fuel energy sources. The vote followed several hours of testimony and fraught public input. A steady stream of neighbors told the council that the site, at 18875 East Bromley Lane, was too close to hundreds of homes and that the risk of exposure to chemical releases or fires at the plant was too great. Also in the audience Tuesday were a number of project supporters who touted the 300 or so jobs and the nearly $200 million investment the Calif...Opinion: Ken Buck takes on a dirty job, cleaning up the Colorado GOP

Two beehives believed to be at least 80 years old were rehomed after they were discovered in Old Main at the University of Colorado Boulder in August.Miles McGaughey, owner of Mountain Warrior Honey in Longmont, said the hives are “ancient.” McGaughey is a beekeeper and specializes in extracting large beehives from historic buildings, supporting the bees recovery and eventually rehoming them to a permanent location.“It’s an estimation, but after seeing lots of different combs after different ages, it was at least 80 or maybe older,” he said, later adding, “Anytime you deal with older structures, the chances are they’ve had bees in them for quite some time.”One of two hives that were found at Old Main at CU Boulder during an initial inspection of the building (Courtesy Photo / CU Boulder)McGaughey said he can tell how old a beehive is based on the colors of its layers.
