House advances motion to oust McCarthy

Published Tue, 25 Feb 2025 17:17:26 GMT

The House on Tuesday moved closer to a vote on whether House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) should keep his gavel after Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), 10 other House Republicans, and a unified Democratic Caucus defeated an effort to kill the “motion to vacate.”The chamber voted 208-218 on a motion to table Gaetz’s resolution to oust McCarthy, setting the stage for a vote on whether McCarthy should remain in the top spot. The vote is bad news for McCarthy, who had argued that it would be bad for the institution of the House for Democrats to help in removing him.And it came only after Democrats decided against protecting McCarthy. Emerging from a closed-door meeting in the Capitol, members of the caucus said they would vote to oust McCarthy — dealing a blow to McCarthy and putting his Speakership in hot water. It sets the chamber up for yet another historic vote that, like McCarthy’s history 15-ballot Speaker’s election in January, has not been seen in a century. The only other time t...

McDavid and Oilers competing with NHL expansion darlings, Vegas and Seattle, in Pacific Division

Published Tue, 25 Feb 2025 17:17:26 GMT

Sorry, California. And good luck, Connor McDavid. This isn’t your father or grandfather’s NHL expansion era following a season in which the Pacific Division was turned upside down by the league’s two newest franchises. The Stanley Cup resides in Las Vegas. And the Seattle Kraken made a giant leap from their inaugural season growing pains by falling one win short of reaching what would’ve been an all-expansion Western Conference Final matchup against the Golden Knights. And there’s little indication of Vegas or Seattle experiencing a dropoff this year in a division that features a large gap between the top five and bottom three.“We’re excited heading into the season. So are 31 other teams,” Golden Knights general manager Kelly McCrimmon said. “But I think we’ve got reason to have faith in our group and trust in the players that we have. We’re going to put our best foot forward.”Seattle coach Dave Hakstol was more tempered in his outlook, especially given how the Kraken’s 100-point seaso...

Big 12 bids goodbye to the Red River Rivalry. Replacing the Texas-Oklahoma hype could be difficult

Published Tue, 25 Feb 2025 17:17:26 GMT

The Big 12 is losing its marquee matchup when the Red River Rivalry is played Saturday for the final time under the league’s umbrella. No. 3 Texas and No. 12 Oklahoma head to the Southeastern Conference in 2024, the same year the Big 12 expands to 16 schools in what the league hopes will be an exciting launch of a new era. But gone will be its most hyped regular-season game, along with the Sooners’ annual Bedlam meeting with Oklahoma State in a league with no other rivalries on par with those two.“The spotlight of college football” is on this game, said Texas coach Steve Sarkisian, who also had stops in the Pac-12 and in the SEC. He calls Texas-Oklahoma at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas “the best setting in college football” with the howling fans split between orange and crimson. The storied series dates to 1900 and it will belong to the SEC soon enough. It’s one that the Big 12 shouldn’t rush to replace, said Vassilis Dalakas, a sports marketing researcher at San ...

Biden tries to reassure allies of continued US support for Ukraine after Congress drops aid request

Published Tue, 25 Feb 2025 17:17:26 GMT

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden gathered other world powers Tuesday to coordinate on Ukraine as it battles Russia in a war now almost 20 months long — a deliberate show of U.S. support at a time when the future of its aid is entangled with a volatile faction of House Republicans who want to cut off money to Kyiv. The phone call — convened by the United States and joined by key allies in Europe as well as the leaders of Canada and Japan — was held three days after Biden signed legislation hastily sent to him by Congress that kept the federal government funded but left off billions in funding for Ukraine’s war effort that the White House had vigorously backed. All the countries that participated in the call stressed that their backing of Ukraine remains unchanged, and no one questioned whether U.S. support of Kyiv was in doubt, according to the White House. But the administration sternly warned Tuesday that Congress must not let the flow of aid be disrupted, lest Russian P...

Veteran coach Louis van Gaal is back at Ajax as an external advisor to the struggling Amsterdam club

Published Tue, 25 Feb 2025 17:17:26 GMT

AMSTERDAM (AP) — Veteran coach Louis van Gaal is coming out of soccer retirement to help get Dutch power Ajax back on track after its worst start to a season in decades. The Amsterdam club, a four-time European champion, announced late Tuesday that 72-year-old Van Gaal will advise the Ajax Supervisory Board “on football technical matters.”Under new coach Maurice Steijn and with a roster packed with new and inexperienced players signed over the summer, Ajax is 15th in the 18-team Eredivisie after five matches. Ajax also struggled last season in the aftermath of the departure of Erik ten Haag to Manchester United.“I want to help Ajax. I currently spend a big part of my life in Portugal, and this can be well combined with my role as an external advisor,” Van Gaal said in a statement on the Ajax website. Van Gaal said the club must find its way “back up to the top, and we all have to contribute to that.”Van Gaal, who said last year he was being treated for prostate cancer, has been...
