Johan Santana dons Pablo López jersey, in touching surprise to Twins’ ace As Pablo López approached the mound, readying to deliver the baseball for the ceremonial first pitch before Game 3 of the American League Division Series on Tuesday afternoon to his childhood hero, Johan Santana stopped him and started unzipping his navy blue Twins jacket.Underneath his jacket, Santana was wearing a jersey, one which bore López’s name on it, to the surprise of the Twins’ starting pitcher. López turned around towards the Twins’ dugout with a smile on his face and then spun back around and watched Santana point to the name on the back of his jersey. It was a touching moment for the two Venezuelan pitching aces and came a week after López showed up for his first start of the postseason wearing an old Santana jersey. López had no clue of Santana’s intentions and gushed after the game that he thought it was “really freaking cool” and the moment left him a little star struck.“It meant so much to me,” López said. “It’s kind of like a huge full-circle moment. … He ackn...

Twins star Royce Lewis proves he is, in fact, human in Game 3 loss It’s easy to forget that star third baseman Royce Lewis is capable of having a bad game like everybody else. This is the same guy that made a habit of hitting grand slams for the Twins in the regular season, then homered in consecutive plate appearances during his playoff debut last week. The 24-year-old wunderkind has everything it takes to become a superstar. He might already be that for the Twins. He’s that good.Which is why it felt so weird to watch Lewis prove he is, in fact, human with his performance on Tuesday afternoon at Target Field. Though he wasn’t the only reason the Twins fell 9-1 to the Houston Astros, Lewis played a major role, finishing 0 for 4 with a pair of strikeouts.“There were a lot of situations that I had that I left people on base,” Lewis said. “That’s on me. It’s upsetting. I’m very self aware of that.”The way Lewis struggled throughout the game was a microcosm of the way the Twins swung the bats a...

Packers head into bye week needing to find solutions for their slumping offense

Packers head into bye week needing to find solutions for their slumping offense Packers cornerback Jaire Alexander was simply trying to explain why Green Bay’s defense needs to do more. But his comments underscored how much of a concern Green Bay’s offense has become as the Packers head into their bye week.“Yeah, I think at this point it’s pretty obvious that the defense has to not give up any touchdowns,” Alexander said after the Packers’ 17-13 Monday night loss at Las Vegas. “I think that’s the part of being self-critical of our defense because the offense is pretty young and they’re still figuring out their mojo. So the defense, we’ve got to do more to score and stop them from scoring.”The defense did plenty to help the Packers win a game Monday night. The offense just failed to do its part, which has been a common theme lately for a young group suffering serious growing pains. After averaging 31 points over their first two games, the Packers have averaged just 17 over their past three. The offense’s plunge explains why the Packers are below .500 for the first...
