When Stratton spoke to Potts on his birthday, April 15, he was happy to have made it to 102. “But he knew that his body was kind of shutting down on him, and he was just hoping that he could get better but (it) turned out not,” Stratton said. Potts was born and raised in Honey Bend, Illinois, and enlisted in the Navy in 1939. He was working as a crane operator shuttling supplies to the Arizona the morning of Dec. 7, 1941, when the Pearl Harbor attack happened, according to a 2021 article by the Ut...

Hertha’s survival hopes dwindling despite coach’s return

Published Tue, 25 Feb 2025 09:09:11 GMT

BERLIN (AP) — Hertha Berlin’s hopes of Bundesliga survival were pinned on Pál Dárdai’s return for the last six games of the season. If he expected a warm welcome on Saturday for his third stint as Hertha coach, he had to wait. The club’s hardcore fans stayed outside in protest while the team warmed up for its vital game against Werder Bremen. Hertha then slumped to a 4-2 loss to remain bottom with dwindling chances of survival.Even before the match, there was little hope Dárdai’s return could spark some sort of miraculous change in fortune.“It’s a new start with Pál, but whether he manages it is questionable. It’ll be hard,” Hertha supporter Klaus Müller told The Associated Press. “At Hertha, there’s been too much messing around at management level.”Hertha’s demise since Dárdai’s first stint in charge from 2015-19 has been plain to see. Investor Lars Windhorst started backing the club in 2019, millions were wasted on his dream of chasing European glory, then money ran out as the effec...

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Real Madrid beat Celta Vigo 2-0 on Saturday to pressure Barcelona before the Spanish leader hosts Atletico Madrid needing a win to quash any fears of a late season slump.Marco Asensio put Madrid ahead three minutes before halftime from a pass by Vinícius Júnior after the winger sped clear on the flank.Center back Éder Militão again showed his punch in attack by using a powerful header to turn in a corner kick by Asensio in the 48th.Madrid’s win trimmed Barcelona’s still-healthy lead to eight points with one more game played. Two rounds ago, Barcelona could have gone ahead by as many as 15 before it was held to the first of two consecutive draws that have allowed Madrid to breathe a little bit of life into its nearly hopeless title defense.A loss by Barcelona to third-placed Atletico at Camp Nou on Sunday could embolden Madrid with eight games to play.Either way, Madrid has its priorities placed on a possible cup double, not a still unlikely comeback in the dom...
