SUNNYVALE — A man was shot early Wednesday morning while confronting thieves attempting to steal his car’s catalytic converter, police said. The shooting happened at about 3:30 a.m. outside a home on the 1500 block of Klamath Drive, the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety said in a news release. At least one of four thieves fired multiple shots at the man after he confronted them on his driveway, police said. Deep-sea octopuses are typically solitary creatures that inhabit frigid waters in one of Earth’s most challenging environments. The 2018 discovery of thousands of the eight-legged cephalopods about 2 miles below the ocean’s surface flummoxed and fascinated marine scientists in equal measure. The consortium of octopuses clustered around a hydrothermal vent — an opening in the seafloor where warm, chemical-rich fluids flow out — about 10,500 feet (3,200 meters) down in what’s known as the midnight zone, a place of perpetual darkness. The octopus garden — found on a small hill near the base of Davidson Seamount, an extinct underwater volcano 80 miles (128.7 kilometers) southwest of Monterey, California — was full of a species called Muusoctopus robustus, nicknamed the pearl octopus by the research team because of the way they look while upside down protecting their eggs. The find is the largest known aggregation of octopuses on the planet — researchers counted more than 6,000 octopuses in...San Jose Chamber seeks third CEO in three years amid downtown slump

Citing a lack of oversight that allowed abuses of power within the police force, the Antioch City Council has agreed to give itself the authority to hire, supervise and remove its police chief. But that won’t happen until 90 days after the second reading of the ordinance in September, giving Acting City Manager Kwame Reed time to hire an interim chief, which could happen as early as next week, according to Mayor Lamar Thorpe.“The reason for that is if you pick someone next week or so, we’re looking at two or up to three months in terms of the background check,” Thorpe explained. “So, I’m just trying to make sure we’re respectful of his (Reed’s) authority now.”The move — on a 3-2 split vote with councilmembers Mike Barbanica and Lori Ogorchock dissenting — came only days after five former and current Antioch police officers and one community service officer were indicted following an FBI and Contra Costa County Distric...Man shot in the leg confronting catalytic converter thieves in Sunnyvale
