Every NFL team throws in an occasional clunker. The Steelers picked a poor time for theirs

Published Tue, 25 Feb 2025 17:31:32 GMT

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Mike Tomlin laughed. Then he bit his tongue.Asked if he could describe a bafflingly flat 24-10 loss to Arizona on Sunday in one word, the longtime Pittsburgh Steelers coach smiled, let out a somewhat sarcastic chuckle, and cautioned that he needed to watch what he said before settling on “subpar.”That’s one word for it.Here’s another. Well actually, here are two: poorly timed. The NFL regular season is a grind both physically and mentally, particularly for a team such as the Steelers that engages in rock fights weekly. Upsets happen every Sunday (or Monday, or Thursday). No team — no matter how good — is immune.Flat spots happen. They are unavoidable. It’s one of the reasons the 1972 Miami Dolphins pop champagne every year when the last unbeaten team falls.Yet the Steelers had thought they’d gotten their mystifying no-show out of the way in Houston in Week 4, a loss that looking back doesn’t seem nearly as bad now as it did in the momen...

Democrats held their Senate majority in November and flipped control of the House of Delegates. The leaders of the two major state parties were on hand for the meeting. In remarks afterward to reporters, they said they wanted to convey their confidence in Virginia’s elections system at a time when polling shows many Americans remain critical about the state of U.S. democracy.“I’m satisfied with the way the election was administered, and the ultimate tabulations that were done, and the final determinations and the certification today,” said Rich Anderson, chairman of the Republican Party of Virginia. MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — A year ago, the Miami Dolphins began December with a loss to San Francisco that jump-started a five-game losing streak.Sunday’s 45-15 rout of the Washington Commanders was an emphatic turnaround for Miami, which is 9-3 for the first time in 22 years.“I think it says a lot about where this team has grown from last year,” coach Mike McDaniel said. “What I’ve seen is coaches and players fully commit to the idea of getting better, and it says a lot about the team because everything that you see last week, this week is an accumulation of deliberate intent. BERLIN — Germany’s ruling coalition risks further crisis after the country’s federal audit court warned on Monday evening that its supplementary budget for 2023 is “extremely problematic under constitutional law.”The court’s statement comes ahead of Tuesday’s key parliamentary budget committee hearing.Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s government was forced to propose the supplementary budget last month after a bombshell ruling by the country’s constitutional court blew a €60 billion hole in its finances. That court ruling limited the government’s ability to draw from special funds outside the regular budget that were created to circumvent the country’s constitutional debt brake. The latter restricts the federal deficit to 0.35 percent of GDP, except in times of emergency. The decision means that about €40 billion that has already been used this year for energy price subsidies, and which was financed through such ...
