ST. LOUIS – With violence swirling around St. Louis, debate is ongoing in Jefferson City on whether the state should take over the city’s police department.The state ran the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department until 2013, when citizens voted to return control of police to the police. But the department’s disputes with St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner, who recently announced she’ll step down June 1, and other issues has led many lawmakers to believe police would be better off if Jefferson City ran things rather that St. Louis officials.St. Louis Mayor Tishaura Jones is dead set against losing control of the police and having that go to the state of Missouri, much like Kansas City.The Ethical Society of Police, which represents Black officers, is in agreement with the St. Louis Police Officers Association that a state takeover would be for the best.Chris Goodson, a former head of the city police board, oversaw the department under state control. Family and community members peacefully marched along Compton Boulevard on Sunday to raise awareness and demand justice for a coach after he was wrongfully detained. The community is hoping that the march will help prevent this from happening to others. A woman who was severely injured in a two-car crash in the Mid-Wilshire area of Los Angeles a little more than a week ago remains in critical but stable condition, her family says. Authorities responded to the collision, near the intersection of La Brea Avenue and San Vincente Boulevard, at around 2 a.m. on April 28. At least eight people were injured in the crash. Three of the victims were treated at the scene. Four others were taken to the hospital, including Ashley Lynn Brum who suffered a traumatic brain injury, her family said. Footage from the scene shows the damage to both cars, along with a sheared fire hydrant spewing water into the air. Clothing, tires and shattered glass littered the street in the hours after the crash as crews worked to clean up the debris while police investigated.
