Australia edges France on penalties to reach the Women’s World Cup semifinals, will face England

Published Tue, 25 Feb 2025 11:16:06 GMT

BRISBANE, Australia (AP) — Mackenzie Arnold’s impact on Australia’s biggest Women’s World Cup moment was so immense that it’s hardly surprising it took vanquished France coach Herve Renard to describe it best.“We came up against a Goliath of a goalie. What a game,” Renard said.Australia won a penalty shootout 7-6 against Renard’s team after their quarterfinal ended 0-0 in regulation and extra time on Saturday.Arnold was “the winning factor,” the French coach acknowledged, “both in normal time but also in extra time and then during the shootout.”Indeed. Arnold was instrumental in Australia advancing to the semifinals for the first time and ending the so-called curse of the host nation.Cortnee Vine, playing in her first World Cup and going on late as a substitute, was the 10th in a line of 11 penalty takers picked for Australia. She strode to the spot, aiming to finish off where two of her teammates couldn’t, and calmly converted to give the Matilda...

Published Tue, 25 Feb 2025 11:16:06 GMT

Published Tue, 25 Feb 2025 11:16:06 GMT

By REBECCA BOONE (Associated Press)Follow live updates about wildfires that have devastated parts of Maui in Hawaii this week, destroying a historic town and forcing evacuations. The National Weather Service said Hurricane Dora, which passed south of the island chain, was partly to blame for strong winds that initially drove the flames, knocking out power and grounding firefighting helicopters. An updated damage assessment released overnight by Maui County put in stark relief the Lahaina Fire’s destructive power. More than 80% of the 2,719 structures exposed to the fire were damaged or destroyed. Shippers warned to stay away from Iranian waters over seizure threat as US-Iran tensions high

Published Tue, 25 Feb 2025 11:16:06 GMT

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Western-backed maritime forces in the Middle East on Saturday warned shippers traveling through the strategic Strait of Hormuz to stay as far away from Iranian territorial waters as possible to avoid being seized, a stark advisory amid heightened tensions between Iran and the U.S. A similar warning went out to shippers earlier this year ahead of Iran seizing two tankers traveling near the strait, the narrow mouth of the Persian Gulf through which 20% of the world’s oil passes. While Iran and the U.S. now near an apparent deal that would see billions of Iranian assets held in South Korea unfrozen in exchange for the release of five Iranian-Americans detained in Tehran, the warning shows that the tensions remain high at sea. Already, the U.S. is exploring plans to put armed troops on commercial ships in the strait to deter Iran amid a buildup of troops, ships and aircraft in the region.U.S. Navy Cmdr. Italy’s justice minister visits prison where 2 inmates died as advocates warn of summertime suicides

ROME (AP) — Italy’s justice minister visited a Turin prison on Saturday where two women died within hours of each other, as prisoner advocates warned of a spate of summertime suicides in Italy’s overcrowded detention facilities.Justice Minister Carlo Nordio told reporters his visit wasn’t an inspection or investigation into the Lorusso and Cutugno prison, but rather a demonstration of solidarity with the facility following the deaths Friday. He called for alternative forms of detention and the conversion of military barracks for prison use to help relieve overcrowding.According to news reports and the Antigone Association, which advocates for better prison conditions, an Italian woman killed herself in her cell at the prison, while a Nigerian woman died within hours in the facility’s mental health ward after having refused food and drink since she arrived July 22. Even before their deaths, Antigone had counted 42 prison suicides so far this year, following the 85 in 2022...
